[WARNING: Profanity laced tirade coming up.]

If my cousin attempts to ridicule me for being born in the States one more time, I swear to God I’m gonna cave her fuckin’ chest in.

‘What!? You don’t eat metemgee? Wha’ you mean you no like black pudding? What about plaintain? YOU DON’T LIKE PLAINTAIN!!!?? Woy, you is a real yankee gyal yes. You ain’t no good food. Only pizza an french fry an dem tings. You ain’t no true Guyanese.’

No bitch I’m not, and never did I claim to be. I’m Guyanese-American trick, reppin’ the best of both worlds. And if Guyana is such a bomb diggity place to be what the hell you doing up here!?

Sorry folks but I been hearing this shit for too damn long. I understand the love/hate thing folks have with this country and with home but really, why are you antagonizing me cuz I prefer r&b to soca. Or cuz I don’t know what you talking about when you start reminiscing about star apples, Mashramani and your friends down Regent street?

It’s natural for folks to try and one up the next person. To show they are superior to others in some area in life. In the world of the hyphenated West Indian there are often cultural war games between the island-grown and the American-born.

I’m just tired of defending myself and my cultural down-ness to these instigators. I didn’t choose to be born/raised here but I’m damn glad I was. This land ain’t perfect but there’s a reason everyone is trying to get up in here.

So stop sneering and start sharing damnit. Show me what I’ve been missing while living in the land of the free, home of the brave without that condescending attitude. And maybe I’ll reconsider putting that scotch bonnet in your bowl of pepperpot. 🙂

Seriously, what is with the mocking of the Caribbean-American? Is it not possible to love both your home country and the land of the free, home of the brave? How do you respond when you encounter intra-cultural racism? Tell me nuh?!
